Stockholm World Water Week, 17 – 23 August 2008
Himalaya - Changing Landscapes photo exhibition started its European tour from the World Water Week in Stockholm in August. This week-long event brought everyone in the 'water world' to Stockholm for networking, capacity-building, partnership-building and follow-up on the implementation of international processes and programmes in water and development.

Our exhibition was located in the lobby of the Stockholm International Fairs and Congress Center in Älvsjö. A huge eight metre long repeat panorama pair welcomed the visitors, and a further 12 panels of photos of mountains and people completed the exhibition. However, the star of the exhibition turned out to be our melting ice sound installation.

Three long plastic tubes, filled with ice cubes, were hanging from the ceiling. As the ice inside melted it dripped onto a metal cup. For a while nothing happened, but once the water level reached a critical point the cup would tip over, bringing the structure off balance, and causing a small metal hammer to hit a Tibetan singing bowl, therefore producing a beautiful sound. As each installation would make a sound every 2 – 3 minutes the space was filled with frequent 'blings' from the singing bowls. People were curious, and would stop and inspect the installation for several minutes. One visitor told us that the installation spoke more than 'a hundred pages in a book'.

The World Water Week in Stockholm involves more than 170 international organisations. ICIMOD also held a seminar, together with ICRAF-China, on Asian Water Towers where six regional experts presented their cases from six Himalayan countries.
